Hi Matthew,
Blow by blow...
1) At some listers suggestions, in December we started CMS Forum
(http://www.cms-forum.org) to collect valuable discussions from the old
CMS list (http://www.cms-list.org)
2) This mailing list (CMS-Forum) was then started to provide
announcements and discussions to enhance the Forum. Ann Rockley pointed
out that people need reasons/reminders to visit a Forum. But we did not
want to add Forum traffic to the old CMS-list.
3) Some others objected to a Forum, and suggested a Wiki would be better
to collect CMS knowledge. So we started CMS Wiki
(http://www.cmswiki.com). It is growing nicely, with thousands of hits
per week.. The Glossary is really big.

4) On January 13, the old CMS-list went down and has yet to come up
again (status at http://www.cms-list.org). Many contacts with the list
mom revealed the old list will be down for awhile.
5) We researched mailing-list best practices, created a NetiquetteFAQ,
and found that meta-discussions (like this one) are best kept off the
main list.
6) We created a new general CMS mailing list (cms at lists.cms-forum.org),
and moved this list's members to it. Over time, this CMS Forum list will
scale back to Forum announcements and discussions.
7) We created support lists (which can be ignored by those with no
interest) for those who want to make more commercial announcements
(CMS-PR), one for developers (CMS-Develop), and one for meta discussions
(CMS-Meta).
Apologies for the confusion, but we are all CM professionals, and should
be able to organize our mailing list activity the way we organize all
our content. Similar naming allows you to filter/gather them easily with
your email client.
The top line is that we have a general CMS mailing list at
cms at lists.cms-forum.org. It has yet to be inaugurated with a post. List
info at http://mailman.skybuilders.com/mailman/listinfo/cms.
Once everyone knows about the new general list, we should switch to it.
I for one, would be pleased if the old list would just come back online,
because we have lost hundreds of list members. This list was built from
my personal address book and my editing of many of your valuable posts
onto CMS Forum discussions. Go to http://www.cms-forum.org and Search
for your work.
Would you like to be a list mom and help us administrate? That's the
purpose of CMS-Admin. List info at
http://mailman.skybuilders.com/mailman/listinfo/cms-admin.
