[CMS-Forum] The Debate

I have been reading through these e-mails with interest (as there have been
no other actual 'CMS question' posts) since the debate started. What I am
still perplexed about is whether there is an actual debate here or not. The
simple facts seem to be:
- Vendors are discouraged from posting PR bulletins because that doesn't
align with what these 'Forums' or 'Lists' were originally created to address
(TRUE) . I also would like to point out that those vendors who post relevant
replies to the list and make strong contributions are the ones that most of
us 'non-vendors' will build up respect for and look into ourselves. There
are a number of vendor posters who consistently provide excellent
information and feedback to those of us investigating/implementing/operating
a CMS. These are the ladies and gentlemen who represent organisations that I
have looked into in more detail/told associates/other government departments
about etc. Basically I'm trying to say subtelty sells. This doesn't mean
there is no place for press releases and perhaps Bob Doyle could look into a
once weekly post to the forum-list with a link to the latest press releases
etc (but ensuring each individual one doesn't get posted to the list);
- The purpose of all forums, whether actual physical round table or
web-based, is to discuss a common area of interest. Since I joined this one
a number of months ago I have found it an invaluable resource in the
resolution of issues/answering of questions by a group of informed
individuals. We went live at the end of January with a website that we are
all proud of and one which was shaped in no small way by the contributions
of CMS-list members; and
- Not only do those non-vendors of us want the vendors to contribute, we
need your expertise. This forum would not exist without you all. If someone
posts a question about implementing a new CMS there is no reason, as a
vendor, anyone can post a reply to the list with general hints and tips
about implementation while approaching the original message poster
(individually) and letting them know how you believe your product could
potentially be a good match or alternatively ask to be included in the
tender process. Surely thats the best of both worlds?
Hopefully we can put this debate to bed and move on to the next exciting CMS
topic of the moment...anyone got a good question!?
Kind regards,
Michael Cooch.

Subject: [CMS-Forum] interesting articles
Howdy folks,
I'm not sure if the "I work for a CMS company therefore I cannot post to the
list" debate has been resolved yet, but in the meantime, take a look at the
articles we have listed here:
http://sitellite.org/index/news-overview-action
Some of you may find some of them interesting, especially the one entitled
"what
is the value of a CMS?" It is on exactly what we are talking about here: all
hype / no substance.
Yes I know I work for a CMS company. Sorry. And yes I know "I" wrote the
article... can I help it if it's good?
josh
